About 11 years and a month ago from this time of writing, SpikyRocket existed on YouTube. Later on changed to MattyMixer and then for the longest time, Mix Master Matt. Those were the originating names of the YouTube channel I ran between almost mid 2012 to early 2018 doing numerous mashups online during my high school years. Initially for fun, it turned into an outlet of some of the stresses I had gone through for some time, namely high school dramas, especially with the likes of Linkin Park, Skillet, and sometimes songs that kinda had some sorta emotion into it (it’s why Dr. Eggman Showdown had so many mashups because at the time, it was always about betrayal, although in hindsight it was hardly the case). It’s why also I held media like Frozen and RWBY so dearly to me that helped me through high school too because of relatable characters.

Thanks to the suggestions and requests of many subscribers, even if some I never actually put into action, I got into a lot more artists and video game series I normally wouldn’t because of well… a stubborn nature of getting into new things at the time. What was initially just Sonic the Hedgehog turned into thanks to mashups became interests in:

  • Skillet
  • Linkin Park
  • Persona
  • BlazBlue, albeit much later on
  • RWBY
  • Jet Set Radio

And many more.

In roughly mid 2018, I announced and enacted in the same week that mashup channel would be deleted, and also mentioning how I wanted to also pursue music production (which I studied that year too), so having the mashup channel would feel… dishonest. So a week after that video I believe I had put out mentioning it, even after some suggestions on not taking down the channel for legacy purposes, I did it anyway, and created a new channel for the purpose of not just redoing mashups in a different way with assistance from what I learned from music production, but also creating my own original music as well.

…as you may have noticed, that never really turned out well.

Between the second half of 2018 to about 2023, I’ve been still figuring out my life, especially as I was a coming adult basically needing to figure out finding work, but also realising personal concerns like anxiety and depression, to name a few. But in the mist, there was something of importance that I had to do because of my old YouTube channel… what that is can be left to be open-ended, but let’s say I was able to mostly do what I had hoped to achieve. And for that reason, unless I have more financial liberty now to do so, I’m not open to requests on the new channel.

On the note of the new channel, Mix May came in as the new name because naturally, I had a bit of a self-identity discovery finding out I indeed am transgender. Mix May was used first in VRChat as I went there to boost my confidence talking to strangers online vocally (worked but then backfired because of a particular incident). That’s why my YouTube channel with the original works and “done from scratch” arrangements of mashups is now called Mix May instead of Mix Master Matt.

As both my personal experiences have worsened my well-being and the world has gotten more… difficult to transverse between the state of the world with inflation and rising prices, AI’s BS, and just the world being more sucky… that’s when I decided to return to my old roots: mashups, hoping to bring a little bit of something to people for a little more entertainment, and maybe to allude to some stories to share. So while my other channel, intended for original works and re-arranged/done from scratch mashups is still up, I made a ‘sister channel’: “Mix May [Mix Master Redux]”, to do what I actually ended up missing doing as a hobby online. Check it out for some new bops!

And of course between 2018 and now, I’ve gotten into a lot more video game series and music all over… and I can’t wait to share more mashups and bring a little something for you all to enjoy.

Oh yeah, someone did archive the old mashups on a google page if you want to hear them again, check out this YouTube video! (Albeit, uses my online deadname c:)
